about ken
I am a freelance solutions architect/developer and entrepreneur based in Southern California. I have delivered or led teams on more than 100 different software projects and several commercial packaged software products. I have also founded two software companies.
Currently, I am primarily involved with cloud and software as a service (SaaS) applications and products. I am particularly interested in RESTful architectures and single page applications.
The Macintosh Years
My passion for writing code began when I purchased a Macintosh 512 in 1985. Prior to getting my Mac I had been programming in Pascal and Basic. But when I first booted up that Mac I was hooked. I started programming in C and also in a database platform called 4th Dimension. My consulting career began soon thereafter for PacTel Cellular and The Walt Disney Companies, where I was using 4th Dimension to build front-ends to Oracle on VMS. I was also using various client platforms/languages to write front ends to Sybase/Microsoft SQL Server.
Windows
After the launch of Visual Basic in 1991, I primarily developed solutions on the Microsoft development stack. I started a company focused on delivering enterprise business solutions and we became one of the top solution providers for Microsoft during most of the 1990's. Our team of about 30 people helped companies throughout the United States architect, develop and implement solutions. My team and I were frequent speakers at conferences around the world and authored numerous technical papers. We also developed and marketed the Start Developing software product for Visual Basic and Access.
Moss Software
In 1998 I launched Moss Software and served as CEO, an enterprise class provider of Customer RelationShip (CRM) Management software. Over the next two years we raised $15 million in venture capital and went from no revenue to $4 million with more than 25 customers using our product in over 30 countries. Our product, ActiveSales, was windows based and primariy written in C++ and Microsoft SQL Server. We had an innovative architecture that enabled centralized updating of remote machines, software components and synchronizing data from a central server. In 2001, E.piphany (NASDAQ:EPNY) purchased Moss Software for about $60 million in stock. I briefly served as a Vice President of Sales at E.phipany.
.net/c#/web
In early 2002, I coded and delivered my first enterprise web application using asp.net/sql server. The solution, used by a real estate company in the Pacific Northwest, is still in production today and has been available 7 x 24 with 99.999% uptime.
It was during this period that I switched to C# as my primary development language. From 2002 to 2009 I worked with several companies in the commercial printing industry and my team and I created an e-commerce platform that enabled corporate customers to order standard and customized products online. The application utilized a server engine we created integrating Adobe In-Design/Web-Services/RPC's to generate real time .pdf proofs to customers ordering customized products. Customers such as Red Robin, Ihop, Apria and many others relied on this application to order items such as Menus, Marketing Materials and other customized printing products.
In addition to architecting and programming the e-commerce solution stack, we managed the data center and day to day operations.
Web 2.0 | spa | Javascript
In 2010 I served as the technical lead for a project at AP Technology in Carlsbad, CA. The project customers were Bank of America and the State of California and we developed the technology that resulted in entitlement payments for the State of California to move from a check production/mailing process to a distributing debit cards and funding them as needed. This system has been in production continously and has successfully processed over $40 billion in payments.
From 2011 to 2013 I architected and developed another product for the residential real estate industry that was in production until 2016. During this period I also stopped using asp.net webforms and shifted to MVC and RESTful architectures to build more interactive, responsive applications.

In 2014 I developed a SaaS web application for a customer that enabled retailers and restaurants to track and issue rewards points for frequent customers.
I began leaning more on bootstrap and developing better responsive apps as well as also utilizing other data storage technologies in Microsoft Azure.
From 2015 to 2017 I was the technical and development lead for a suite of integrated SaaS products that help small/mid sized retailers by providing a platform that features Point of Sale, e-Commerce, Loyalty/Rewards & Email Marketing.
